Coffee & cake: an old German custom goes global

From 3-4 pm is coffee & cake time. Find out what all the fuss is about and why the world is warming to this typically German tradition here.

Coffee & cake galore! When Germans invite guests round in the afternoon, there’s sure to be a fine spread of pastries, cream cakes, fruit flans and biscuits. All with a top notch cup of coffee and some lively chatter.  Whether on a Sunday, a holiday, a birthday or just a regular weekday – there’s always time for this tasty afternoon break! The custom originated in 17th century Germany with the opening of Leipzig’s first coffee house. It soon spread across the country, reaching as far as Austria and England.

Coffee & cake for an afternoon break
This delicious intermission between lunch and dinner is now popular all over the world. Emigrants took the custom of catching up over coffee with a slice of “Strudel” to the US, where the name even crept into the English language. Other German cakes, such as “Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte” or “Black Forest Gateau” as we know it, are known almost everywhere.
By spreading the word in its international restaurants, Vapiano is keeping the coffee & cake tradition alive. We want everyone to make time for a cup of premium coffee, be it a Cappuccino, Espresso Doppio or Caffè Americano, with a slice of Death by Chocolate, Blueberry Cheesecake or even a Cappuccino Gelato from the July/August Specials menu. Simply sit back, relax and take the time for a good old catch-up with friends, family or work colleagues.
