Vegan Bloggercooking

Whether pizza, pasta or dolci – nobody went home hungry after our vegan cook-off in Cologne. Find out what happened when we spent a morning cooking with eight of our favourite bloggers.

If you think eating vegan at Vapiano might leave you feeling disappointed, read on! We invited eight of our favourite vegan or mainly vegan bloggers to a Vapiano’s Rudolfplatz restaurant in Cologne and challenged them to prove the haters wrong. And nobody went home hungry.

The event kicked off at 9 am in a near empty restaurant as Vapiano usually opens at 11am. The only people present were a colourful collection of bloggers and the early shift of Vapianisti, who were busy preparing things for lunch.

The day began with a small vegan breakfast consisting of oven-warmed Ciabatta with jam and plant-based spreads, plus a selection of vegan antipasti, fresh fruit, tea, juices, Vapiano Ice Tea and hot coffee – served either black or with soya milk.

Over breakfast our bloggers introduced themselves and were treated to a sneak peep behind the scenes at Vapiano. Then it was time to don our aprons and select our favourite dishes from the menu. A handy “vegan” logo means customers can see immediately which dishes are vegan or can be prepared as vegan. While some recipes are obviously vegan, others are only apparent at second glance. For example, both Vapiano’s pizza dough and pizza sauce are completely vegan, meaning our stone oven can produce all kinds of cheese-free creations!

After a tour of the restaurant and the odd food-related tale, our bloggers headed to the cooking satiations where chef and trainer Daniele was waiting. Our bloggers were shown how to wash their hands correctly, and once everyone was done the first team got to work.

Julia and Anna from “Subvoyage” marvelled at how heavy a wok can be as Daniele demonstrated how to prepare their favourite dish. Their chosen recipes: our vegan pasta “Crema di Avocado” and a unique creation of avocado cream with strawberries. Both dishes were polished off while still warm.

Next was Nina from “Ninajasmins” and Maria from “veganucci”. They prepared two delicious dishes that were not only vegan, but gluten-free too.

Wiebke from “The Green Dorf” and Pia from “Kraftfutter” were exciting about manning the pizza station. Daniele had lots of cooking tricks up her sleeve and soon made pizza professionals out of both of them!

Pia opted for a fruity theme, topping her pizza with pineapple, figs, tomatoes and mushrooms, while Wiebke plumped for baby spinach, figs and mushrooms. Both variations can be easily recreated by our Vapiano pizza bakers at your request.

Miri from “Fit Miri” and Karina from “Froilein Fux” headed for the pasta station. Karina whipped up a Pasta Ratatouille and Miri created her own recipe using spelt pasta, avocado cream, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and rocket.

Once every blogger had prepared their favourite dish, round two was announced. As it was Valentine’s Day, heart-shaped pizzas, or rabbit shaped pizzas for any children at home, were made, baked and boxed up. There was even the odd portion of Pasta to Go to see our bloggers through the afternoon.

After all the hard work, our bloggers had earned a Dolci! Our vegan choices included Riso Latte di Mandorla – homemade rice pudding with almond milk and vanilla, topped with pineapple, goji berries and a pumpkin seed-caramel biscuit– or our refreshing vegan sorbets. There was lots of chatter and swapping Instagram accounts until midday where we said a cheery goodbye to everyone.
