Foothills of the Andes – Chile’s first Vapiano
Chile - a 4,000 km long piece of land, sandwiched between the Andres and the Pacific Ocean, and only 80 - 400 km wide in parts. The country's first Vapiano restaurant has just opened in the capital Santiago de Chile. Franchise partner Manuel Anders lets us into some secrets.
Santiago is a unique fusion of a modern, aspiring metropolis and the typically relaxed South American lifestyle. Its skyline is marked by a range of colonial buildings and skyscrapers. The city's most impressive attractions include Teatro Municipal, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago in the Plaza de Armas, built in 1748. Art lovers are in for a treat at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes.
The lively Bellavista quarter is both an artist hang-out and a place to party. By day, visitors can browse the local arts & crafts shops and galleries. By night, people flock to the quarter's many bars, restaurants and clubs. My favourite part of town is Lastarria. This neighbourhood has undergone a long process of restoration, and I love the European flair, the architecture and the different mix of people there.
If you're an early bird, I recommend a visit to La Vega Central. From the early hours on, the country's largest vegetable market has a wonderfully authentic atmosphere. If you fancy getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, hire a bicycle and pedal up Cerro San Cristobal. The only other way up the hill is by cable car. The Statue of the Virgin Mary is right at the top and the views from there are simply breathtaking. For lunch, I suggest trying a traditional Chilean barbeque called an "Asado" with Pebre, Chorpian and Empanadas. And for dinner? Relax on the terrace at the Vapiano Parque Arauco restaurant and watch the sun set with a cool, refreshing Aperitif.
